Purpose: 

To outline requirements and clearances for participation in the student volunteer programs offered at UC Davis Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS).

Policy: 
  1. Student volunteers working in the Student Health & Wellness Center are required to have appropriate medical clearance. (See SHCS P&P, 150-08-Employee Infection Surveillance and Pre-employment Screening).
  2. Student Volunteers will be recruited and selected in accordance with department standards.

 

Procedure: 

 

  1. Health Education & Promotion (HEP) and Counseling Services Peer Advocate student volunteers are selected during Spring quarter. Applicants must be registered students. The volunteer position description and application process is posted on the campus Aggie Job Link website. HEP staff and the Peer Advocates Program and Outreach Coordinator determine which applicants are selected. The student volunteer positions are September through June (school year). 
  2. Physical Therapy volunteers are selected at the beginning of each quarter on a first come, first served basis and scheduling availability. 
    1. Applicants must be registered students or off quarter maintaining affiliation with the University (Planned Education Leave Program - PELP). 
    2. Each applicant must be medically cleared prior to participation (See SHCS P&P, 150-08-Employee Infection Surveillance and Pre-employment Screening). 
    3. The training manual for the volunteer program is kept in Physical Therapy. 
    4. Written documentation of all volunteer participation in the training sessions is maintained in the Physical Therapy department.
  3. Optical Shop volunteers are selected each quarter on a first come, first served basis and scheduling needs/availability. 
    1. Applicants must be registered students. 
    2. Selection is determined by the Support Staff Manager, in consultation with the optician. 
    3. Volunteer positions are available year round. 
  4. The department supervisor or designee is responsible for providing the SHCS Human Resources office with a list of student volunteers along with student identification number, telephone number and email address. The department supervisor or designee is responsible for informing the SHCS Human Resources office when a student volunteer leaves the program or a new one is selected.
    1. A spreadsheet of current student volunteers is maintained by the Human Resources department.
    2. SHCS student volunteers are required to complete mandatory safety and compliance training assigned via the campus Learning Management System (LMS). SHCS Human Resources department requests Staff Development & Professional Services to assign this training. The department supervisor or designee is responsible for monitoring the volunteer completes all mandatory training. 
    3. SHCS student volunteers are required to complete the Oath & Patent form (Attachment 1) and the Workers Compensation form entitled Volunteer Information Record (Attachment 2).
    4. SHCS Human Resources department maintains current personnel records of student volunteers.
