Purpose: 

To clarify University policy for use at Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS).

Policy: 

Student Health and Counseling Services supports both career-related and job-related professional development activities that are aligned with the department mission and goals and the employee’s professional growth. SHCS supports continuing education to maintain professional licensure and certifications that increase effectiveness of employee performance in present position and develop skills and knowledge, which may help create opportunities for career advancement. Professional development can include courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, e-learning, cross-training, coaching, internship, or on-the-job training.

Procedure: 
  1. Continuing education and professional development are available to career employees who have completed the probationary period and whose performance is at Meets Expectations or better.
  2. For staff covered by a collective bargaining agreement, the continuing education/professional development provisions of the agreement apply.
  3. For staff NOT covered by a collective bargaining agreement:
    1. Continuing education is scheduled contingent upon operational needs. Supervisors may approve up to 80 hours for non-exempt career staff or 10 workdays for exempt staff, as release time per calendar year, for full time employees or prorated time equivalent to appointment for part-time staff
    2. The provisions of UC Personnel Policies for Staff Members-50 (PPSM), Professional Development apply.
  4. The supervisor shall approve requested leave for professional development based on scheduling, staffing and operational needs.
